Shelter Staff Shaves More Than 4 Pounds Of Fur Off Neglected Animal

I couldn’t even tell what this animal was before all that fur came off - what an unbelievable difference.

Some people can be so cruel towards animals that it’s beyond belief. We even wonder if they can be considered humans. An animal that was dumped in front of a Nevada animal shelter in the middle of the night was neglected to the extent that the staff couldn’t easily identify whether it was a cat or not. Its fur was so entangled and matted that the poor creature could barely move.

Now police are asking for our help identifying this criminal and spreading the word about the cat’s future!

Sadly, Liz Begovich, supervisor of the Douglas County Animal Care & Services, sees abandonment cases like this all the time. But the thing that set this cat’s surrender to the shelter apart from the others was the level of negligence it endured at the hands of its owners.

Due to the pounds of dirty fur, Liz refused to believe the matted creature was, in fact, a cat. Felines are meticulous about their grooming – so finding one with such snarled fur was rare. Liz told The Dodo that the first thing her staff did was rush the cat to the vet for a complete assessment.

“We immediately took him to the vet where they sedated him. They shaved about 4.5 pounds of hair off of him. It filled a full-size kitchen trash bag.”

Before shaving off his fur, Liz said that it was almost impossible for him to move.

“He couldn’t even take a step. I’m guessing that wherever he was, he had his food and water right in front of him. There was just no way for him to move.”

As soon as the shaving was complete, the newly renamed Bob Marley felt like a free cat. Despite his muscle weakness following years of inactivity, Bob Marley was ready to take on the world. He even tried to leap off of the examination table in excitement! The world suddenly felt like his oyster…

While the vet and shelter staff worked to bring Bob Marley back to full health, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has been on a mission to find the person responsible for this horrific case of neglect. The office shared the following message on their official Facebook page:

“The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest who may be involved in abandoning an animal at the Douglas County Animal Shelter in Gardnerville.

On August 16, 2018 Animal Control Officers arrived at the Shelter on Dump Road in Gardnerville and found an animal carrier that contained a neutered male gray cat near the front door. The cat’s entire body of fur was matted and prevented the cat from moving freely… It was an extreme case of animal neglect which had been culminating for years.

Surveillance video was reviewed and it was noted that at 5:41 am on the same date, an older male with a gray goatee, wearing a red shirt, jeans and a baseball cap exited a vehicle on the passenger side and went to the front door with the animal carrier and left the location, abandoning the cat.

A reward is being offered to anyone with information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the suspect(s). Your identity is not needed and you will remain anonymous. Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to call DCSO Dispatch at (775) 782-5126 or Douglas County Secret Witness at: 775-78-CRIME (775-782-7463) or DCSO Sergeant B. Hubkey at (775) 782-9905”
