If you have never heard of the most adorable and unique cat breed ever now it’s the time for us to present to you the Selkirk Rex. These cats with amazingly thick hair were introduced to the world in 1987 and discovered by a woman named Jeri Newman, a cat breeder from Montana. When one of her cats gave birth, one of the babies was quite distinctive. Its fur was thicker and curlier than that of the rest of the litter. Newman was so impressed by how stunning the kitty was that she decided to adopt it. She named it Miss DePesto.
The most amazing thing of all happened when Miss DePesto gave birth to six kittens. Unbelievably, three of them were exactly the same as their mother. It was huge because it meant her trait wasn’t just coincidental but it was there to stay.
Newman knew she discovered a new breed that she decided to name after her stepfather, and that’s how these beauties got the name Selkirk.
To bring more diversity to these cats, breeders like Jeri and others crossbred these cats with other Persians, Exotics, American Shorthairs and British Shorthairs.
After a few years, the cats were recognized by The International Cat Association and the American Cat Fanciers Association and then later by the Cat Fanciers Association. Later on, the University of Veterinary Medicine tested the animals and proved conclusively that they are genetically unique and a distinct line of Rex breed.
These cats are perfect for the family because they are friendly and sociable. The only thing you should be more careful about is for the fur not to mangle, so it needs brushing a couple of times a week. Brushing also helps avoid shedding as these cats do shed and the cats could hack up hairballs as well. If you consider getting one you may also find them by the name of ‘poodle cat’ or ‘Wolf in sheep’s clothing.’
