The family of Aditya Raheja and Sanjana Madappa was about to get bigger and they were overly excited by the thought of becoming parents to a little boy.
The couple was eager to share the news with their family and friends, and although they were all happy for them, almost everyone told them how the baby should be the most important person in their life and how they had to get rid of their dogs for the well being of the little one.
Sanjana and Aditya have five canines on their own and are fostering other dogs too and abandoning them was never an option.
Being an animal activist and working for the welfare organization CUPA in
Bengaluru, India, Sanjana saw many parents-to-be surrendering their pets to the organization and she definitely didn’t want to be one of them.
“Being in animal welfare, one of the most common reasons I hear for giving up a pet is ‘I’m pregnant’. When I have tried to counsel these families, I get it thrown back in my face that since I don’t have children and haven’t experienced a pregnancy, I don’t get to have an opinion,” Sanjana wrote.
Instead of taking their friends and family’s advice, this couple decided to show them that their dogs are their family and nothing could ever make them give them away.
How they did it? By posing for the best photo-shoot we’ve seen in a very long time.
Sanjana asked one of the best companies in their field to help them take the perfect shoots and Bhargavai Naveen of GoLucky Diaries Photography was more than happy to accept the challenge.
Sanjana was told to spend more time in the comfort of her home because she was at risk of pre-delivery. This didn’t bother her much because she had her dogs by her side to keep her company every step of the way.
“I had an unreasonably difficult pregnancy. For the first six months, I was glued to my toilet, even hospitalized because I was throwing up blood,” she wrote.
“I cannot even begin to describe all the thoughts that went through my head but what I can tell you is this: not once did I think, ‘Hmmm, my dogs have got to go.’”
Her furry pals helped her ‘stay sane.’ “I couldn’t afford to stay in bed feeling sorry for myself when I had these kids depending on me,” she wrote. “Taking care of my dogs ensured I never felt the need to blame my pregnancy, the baby, or my husband for the state I was in.”
The message was clear and Sanjana wanted everyone to hear it!
“To all those people I can just say this. I couldn’t ever in good conscience give away an animal that loves me and trusts me with the same innocence and purity that my baby does. And I couldn’t abandon a family member to bring in another.”
“I will not betray a life that depends on me as much as my son does. To all those people I will always say, NOT WITHOUT MY DOGS.”
Honestly, the couple had no idea their photos and their message will spread among so many people. Other animal lovers were there to support their decision of keeping the dogs during the pregnancy and after it.
Naveen was also glad she was part of a photo-shoot that left deep impact at everyone who got see the mesmerizing photos. “I love to find the uniqueness in things and my passion and obsession towards my work has given me the patience to cover the photo story of this amazing couple.”
Sanjana and Aditya welcomed baby Alan into their lives a week after their photos went viral. This boy doesn’t even know how lucky he is because he will get to grow up around so many dogs that will teach him love, kindness, and responsibility.
