He got a 2nd chance!

When Leonard the Pit Bull arrived at The Union County Humane Society, he was labelled as an “aggressive” dog whose demeanor would prevent anyone to adopt him. Thus, Leonard was scheduled to be euthanized. However, Humane Society’s Director, Jim Alloway, saw some potential in Leonard and even envisioned a newly positive future for him.

“I walked out with a squeegee,” Alloway said in an interview. “He ran up and bit it and then he went running through the yard. I knew it was a special characteristic. He wasn’t being aggressive. He wanted to play.”

Alloway had spotted similar characteristics in other police dogs and felt that Leonard was highly suited for police work. Leonard was on his way to becoming the first ever Pit Bull K9 police force member, thanks to a 2nd chance.

Alloway reached out to Storm Dog K9 Training, in order to see if they would work with Leonard. Even though they had never worked with a Pit Bull before, the staff quickly agreed to take him in.

Leonard was however, completely untrained and did not know any commands – but he did love to play. Staff were able to successfully teach him various know-hows, from sniffing out drugs to other tasks with toy rewards.

“He has quite the work ethic,” Storm Dog’s Director of Training for Law Enforcement Krishea Osborne praises the Pit Bull. “He’s got so much play and drive and hunt that he’s a great police dog. He’s constantly wanting to work.”

Clay Township’s Chief of Police Terry Mitchell said that he was not sure about being partnered with Leonard at first, but he soon changed his mind.
After few weeks of training, Leonard became ready to be certified by the state of Ohio – as an official police dog! According to Mitchell, Leonard is simply, just like any other dog after a long day of work. Leonard’s co-workers are also looking forward to having him around on active duty as a part of their team, too!
