When it comes to adopting a pet, people’s first choice would usually be a cat or a dog. There are also those who opt for parrots or maybe fish. However, I guess we don’t really know of many people who keep squirrels at home. One reason is that they belong at the wild, by sometimes, they end up becoming a part of human families. Lovely Thumbelina is such a case.
Her story will definitely warm your heart. This squirrel will become your most favorite animal. We can guarantee that!
It all started back in 2016, in New York, when a pregnant squirrel’s nest had been destroyed by some construction site workers. The poor mother-to-be was determined to give birth to her babies at a safe place so she climbed the 10th floor of a building and entered one of the apartments through the open window.
After the apartment owners returned home, they came across the most unusual sight. Two baby squirrels were laying on their bed. Not knowing what to do, they called wildlife specialists, Christina and Michael, whose plan was to make the mother take the babies outside of the place.
But, the mother refused to do so and was determined to build her new nest inside. She even tried bringing pieces of twigs and branches, but in vain. Since that was impossible, she eventually abandoned the babies and never came back. One of the babies died shortly after, and the other one, our Thumbelina, had been given a new lease on life.
The adorable baby was born late in the season and she didn’t have any other baby squirrels to bond with, so her only companions and caretakers were those of the human kind.
According to the rescuers:
“She always progressed a bit slower. Most babies don’t care for milk once they taste real food, Thumb was a giant baby with a bottle who refused to eat real food. Most babies open their eyes between 4-5 weeks of age, little Thumb waited almost 9 weeks. Most babies can’t wait to jump, and climb, and be ‘a squirrel,’ not Thumb. She alway preferred to walk instead of run, to sit and wait rather than climb or leap, and she only cared to play and interact with her human Mom and Dad.”
Michael and Christina grew so fond of Thumb that the only logical solution was to adopt her. They did the right thing. Now Thumbelina is a real star on Instagram and has more than 130,000 followers who adore her.
This little girl gets lots of attention from her human parents, and seems to love snuggling.
She’s grown quite a bit in the last 2-and-a-half years. Now, she likes everything from dandelions…
…to birthday parties.
She enjoys the photoshoots.
Her humans are really into Halloween, so she’s gone through quite a few charming costumes.
Eating avocado dressed as a baby shark is the cutest thing ever.
And now she’s back to school.
Here, she poses for the most wonderful time of the year.
It’s not like she’s not doing some typical squirrel stuff, such as hiding her nuts.
Wearing cute sunglasses is what she really likes.
She’s the most loved squirrel in the whole world. And the cutest!
She doesn’t really like being outdoors, but her parents make sure she gets familiar with the space around her in case she chooses to be a ‘normal’ squirrel again. How she’ll live is totally up to her.
We are so happy this furry beauty has such a fulfilling and happy life.
