Hunters Father and Son Who Killed Hibernating Bear and Her Cubs Learn Their Fates

But does the punishment fit the crime?

I will never understand how can the misery of someone bring joy to another person. How cruel can one be in order to do harm and take the life of an innocent creature?

It’s beyond sad to know how some individuals enjoy in doing such gruesome acts. Like these father and son who killed a mother bear and her two cubs during their hibernation.

The two murderers were certain how they would get away with what they did, but luckily, they were wrong. A hidden camera caught their act and it helped in the process of convicting them.

Andrew Renner and his 18-year-old son Owen were skiing in Esther Island, Alaska when they spotted the bear family. They soon decided to shot the mother. That disturbed the babies that started crying and screaming. And as leaving them orphans wasn’t enough evil, they proceeded in killing them too.

Although they were aware killing bears was illegal, they still did it. Once they approached the dead animals, they realized the mother bear had a collar and they knew they were in big trouble. Unaware of the cameras, they tried to cover up the murder.

The father and the son came up with a plan to pack the bears’ bodies up. When faced with the authorities they said how they did it in self-defense after the mother bear attacked them first. Everyone knew they were telling lies as the footage was saying something else.

“They’ll never be able to link it to us,” the camera caught the son saying.

Just moments after the killing, the father says, “It doesn’t matter. Bear down.”

“What we saw is that there were two bear cubs that were completely defenseless and were shot at point-blank range,” Assistant Attorney General Aaron Peterson, who prosecuted the case, told the court, calling the crime the “most egregious bear cub poaching case his office has ever seen.”

We can’t be more sad for the lives that were lost in that manner, but at the same time, we are beyond glad the got charged. Andrew was sentenced to three months in prison and barred from hunting for 10 years. Owen, meanwhile, was sentenced to community service and a suspended 30-day sentence.

This should serve as a lesson to others who would dare to hurt a defenseless animal. It’s awesome that we finally understand how animals have the same rights as humans and how their lives are as worth as any person’s life.
