Earlier this week a dog in Voronezh, Russia spent two days buried beneath a building’s front steps after workers filled a sinkhole and trapped her inside. It is unclear whether she simply went unnoticed during the repair or was blatantly ignored.
When the family residing in the home first heard her muted cries, they thought little of it. But as others stood outside and heard the crying continue, there was no doubt where it was coming from. The family immediately contacted the city’s housing office only to be told that nothing could be done.
Luckily for this pup, not everyone agreed to give up on her.
One of the men, Vadim Rustam, decided there was only one thing left to do. He began hammering at the brick and removing them one by one, eventually digging sand out with his hands. When he pushed the last rock aside, a muzzle poked out into the daylight. Rustam helped the pup, named Squirrel, squeeze through the opening to everyone’s immense joy.
We know now that it wasn’t just Squirrel he saved, and by the looks of it this mom-to-be will have a family of her own very soon.
At first she was frightened, Rustam says, but there is no mistaking her wagging tail and polite hellos for anything but pure gratitude. See the entire astonishing rescue below:
