It makes me extremely happy whenever I stumble upon rescue stories in which young kids are involved. It means the young generations do understand the importance of the animals and how we should always treat them with respect.
When 17-year-old Tyri Allen noticed a scared puppy hidden under a parked truck, he immediately tried to get it out of there. The boy walked back and forth in hopes of finding the pup’s mommy, but she was nowhere to be spotted. Leaving it out there on the cold all by itself wasn’t an option, so kind Tyri decided to take it home.
“He went under the truck and picked him up,” Piper Thomas, founder of Hand in Paw, a California rescue group, said. “The puppy was just kind of frozen and shaking, so it wasn’t hard to grab him.”
Tyri’s family was happy to be having this cute visitor, and they were also very proud of their son for saving the poor soul.
“He wasn’t even eating solid food yet — they were syringe-feeding him wet food,” Thomas said. “They took him to the vet and got him dewormed, and when he was old enough, he got his first set of shots.”
The puppy got the name Bruno and became the most loved dog out there. Everyone made sure he was getting all the attention he desperately needed.
“Tyri did a very good job taking care of him,” Thomas said. “He went from a very scared puppy to a very confident one very quickly.”
The biggest issue was that the Allen’s already had two other dogs, and taking care of another one seemed way too demanding, so they did their best to find lucky Bruno a new place to stay.
Fortunately, that’s when Thomas stepped in.
“His dad happens to work with my husband, so he knows what I do, and contacted me and asked me to take him so we could find him a good home,” Thomas said.
She took really good care of the pup who even made best friends with her dog Luna. Thomas’ organization was ready to place Bruno in a forever home and around people who would love his bubbly personality.
“Bruno is hilarious,” Thomas said. “He’s like four pounds now, and my husky is about 50 pounds, and they play so hard. He crawls on top of her, and he’s biting her all over and she’s so gentle with him. But he’s very confident, and he’s great with all size dogs. He’s got a huge personality, but he’s very sweet — and he loves, loves to play. He loves to run around, and he’s just a troublemaker.”
Being only 10 weeks old, Bruno’s chances of being adopted are pretty high.
“He’s going to an adoption event on Saturday, and I have a feeling there’s going to be a lot of people wanting him,” Thomas said.
It is amazing how the sad little puppy found trembling under the truck became a healthy and a happy dog thanks to Tyri. But it’s even more amazing how that same pup changed the teenager’s life. Saving Bruno made Tyri think of all the other animals out there who are left all alone on the streets, and that left him with a life mission of saving as much as he could.
“His dad said that Tyri wants to start rescuing all the dogs,” Thomas said. “He definitely realized that there’s a big problem and that he could do more to help … so I told him he could join my team anytime.”
